A telescope’s magnification is the factor by which the instrument enlarges the image of an object compared to what one would see with thenaked eye. It is calculated simply by dividing the telescope’s focal length by the focal length of the eyepiece used. A telescope with a focal length of 1,000 mm used with a 10-mm eyepiece provides 100x magnification.

Useful Magnification and Maximum Magnification

There is an optimal magnification for each telescope and each object. The minimum useful magnification corresponds to the magnification at which the exit pupil— the beam of light emerging from the eyepiece—is equal to the size of the eye’s dilated pupil (approximately 7 mm). Below this, the collected light is wasted. The maximum useful magnification is generally set at twice the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters: a 150-mm telescope should not exceed 300x magnification for practical purposes. Beyond that, the image becomes blurry and dark without any gain in detail.

Higher magnification isn’t always better

This is the most common mistake among beginners. High magnification reduces the brightness of theimage (the light is spread over a larger area), narrows the field of view, and amplifies optical aberrations and atmospheric turbulence. For extended objects such as nebulae or open clusters, low magnification often provides a much more satisfying view than high magnification.

Importance in Astronomy

Choosing the right magnification is an art. The planets and the Moon benefit from high magnifications to reveal their surface details. Nebulae and globular clusters are best viewed at moderate magnification. Large open clusters such as the Pleiades are more beautiful at low magnification, or even through binoculars.

Practical example

Jupiter, whose apparent diameter varies between 30 and 50 arcseconds depending on its position, reveals its cloud bands and four large moons at magnifications as low as 50x. At 150x magnification, the bands become more detailed and the Great Red Spot becomes visible. At magnifications above 200x, image quality depends entirely on the atmospheric stability of the night.
