Globular cluster
A globular cluster is a spherical grouping of tens to a few hundred thousand stars that are strongly bound by gravity and share a common origin. These compact, spherical structures are among the oldest objects in the universe, often as old as the first galaxies.
Structure and Composition
The stars in a globular cluster are very close together, especially at the center, where the density can be millions of times greater than that of the solar neighborhood. These stars are generally very old— between 10 and 13 billion years old—and belong to the first generations of stars formed after the Big Bang. They are therefore poor in heavy elements, which had not yet been synthesized in abundance.
Location within the galaxy
Globular clusters orbit galaxies within a spherical halo that surrounds the galactic disk. The Milky Way has about 150 of them, the best known of which are Omega Centauri, M13 (the Great Hercules Cluster), and 47 Tucanae. Some large galaxies, such as Andromeda or M87, may contain thousands of them.
Cosmic fossils
Globular clusters are true fossils of the early universe. Their age helps constrain the age of the universe itself—it cannot be younger than its globular clusters. Studying their chemical composition reveals the conditions of the interstellar medium in the early universe, before several generations ofenriched the medium with heavy elements.

Can you see a globular cluster with the naked eye?

Are there planets in globular clusters?
It’s possible, but unlikely for habitable planets. The extreme stellar density in globular clusters causes frequent gravitational disturbances that would destabilize planetary orbits. Furthermore, the low metallicity of the stars (few heavy elements) limits the formation of rocky planets.
