The shutter speed, or exposure time, is the duration during which the camera sensor is exposed to light. In astrophotography, this duration can range from a few fractions of a second for the Moon and bright planets to several cumulative hours for fainter objects such as distant galaxies or faint nebulae.

A photographic sensor records the photons that reach it. The longer the exposure time, the more photons accumulate on the sensor, and the more faint objects become detectable. The Hubble Deep Field, one of the most famous images inastronomy, is the result of an exposure accumulated over several days, pointed at a seemingly empty region of the sky.
