Supernova

A supernova is the catastrophic explosion of a star at the end of its life. In a matter of seconds, it releases an amount of energy equivalent to what the Sun will produce over its entire lifetime. Visible from millions of light-years away, a supernova can outshine its entire galaxy for several weeks.

Why does a star explode?

Stars live thanks to nuclear fusion that occurs in their cores: they convert hydrogen into helium, producing the energy that causes them to shine and keeps them from collapsing under their own gravity. When they exhaust their fuel reserves, the balance is disrupted.

For massive stars (more than eight times the mass of the Sun), the core collapses in a fraction of a second. This sudden collapse triggers a rebound and a shock wave that propels the star’s outer layers into space at thousands of kilometers per second. This is a core-collapse supernova. The remnant of the core becomes a neutron star or a black hole.

There is another type of supernova, known as a Type Ia supernova: a white dwarf accreting matter from a companion star exceeds a critical mass and explodes completely. These supernovae are essential in cosmology because their luminosity is predictable, making them distance markers.

The Cosmic Element Factory

Supernovae play a fundamental role in the chemistry of the universe. During the explosion, extreme temperatures and pressures allow for the formation of heavy elements— iron, nickel, gold, and uranium—which are propelled into the interstellar medium. The iron in your blood, the calcium in your bones, and the oxygen you breathe were forged in dead stars during supernova explosions. We are, literally, stardust.

Supernova 1987A

In 1987, a supernova visible to the naked eyewas observed in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 168,000 light-years away. It is the closest supernova observed since 1604. It made it possible to verify numerous theoretical predictions and, for the first time, to detect neutrinos from a stellar explosion. Its afterglow continues to be monitored today by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Can the Sun explode as a supernova?

No. The Sun is not massive enough to end its life as a supernova. In about five billion years, it will become a red giant, then contract into a white dwarf, ejecting its outer layers as a planetary nebula.

How often do supernovae occur?

In a galaxy like the Milky Way, a supernova occurs on average two to three times per century. The last one observable from Earth without instruments was SN 1604, known as Kepler’s Supernova.

Could a nearby supernova threaten Earth?

A supernova located less than 50 light-years away could theoretically damage Earth’s ozone layer with its radiation. However, there are no candidate stars for an imminent supernova at that distance from us.
