The light-year is a unit of distance equal to the distance traveled by light in a vacuum during a Julian year (365.25 days). It is approximately 9,461 billion kilometers, or 9.461 × 1012 km. Despite its name, the light-year measures a distance, not a time.

Why this unit?

Astronomical distances are so vast that kilometers become impractical. Proxima Centauri, the star closest to the Sun, is 40,000 billion kilometers away— a number that’s hard to work with. In light-years, that same distance is just 4.24 al, which is much more meaningful. The light-year also allows us to immediately link distance and time: observing an object located at 100 al is to see it as it was 100 years ago.

Traveling back in time through observation

The light-year reveals a remarkable property of astronomy: looking far away means looking into the past. When you observe Andromeda, you see it as it was 2.5 million years ago. The most distant galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope are located more than 13 billion light-years away— we see them as they were a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.

In professional astrophysics, astronomers often prefer the parsec (pc) to the light-year. One parsec is approximately 3.26 light-years and corresponds to the distance at which an astronomical unit appears to be at an angle of one arcsecond. The parsec is more convenient for parallax calculations.
