Kuiper Belt
The Kuiper Belt is a vast, ring-shaped region located beyond Neptune’s orbit, between 30 and 50 astronomical units from the Sun. It contains thousands of small icy bodies, remnants of the solar system’s formation. Among its most famous members are Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.
A region rich in objects
The Kuiper Belt is much more densely populated than the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is estimated to contain more than 100,000 objects larger than 100 km in diameter, as well as millions of smaller objects. Its total mass is thought to be 100 times greater than that of the asteroid belt, though still modest compared to Earth’s mass.
Icy Composition
Objects in the Kuiper Belt are composed mainly of ices— water ice, methane, and ammonia—mixed with rocky dust. This composition reflects the icy conditions of the outer regions of the early solar system, where temperatures were low enough to allow these volatile compounds to condense. Short-period comets, such as Halley’s Comet, originally come from this region.
History of the Discovery
The existence of the Kuiper Belt was proposed in the 1940s and 1950s by several astronomers, including Kenneth Edgeworth and Gerard Kuiper. However, observational confirmation did not come until 1992 with the discovery of the first trans-Neptunian object, (15760) 1992 QB1. Since then, more than 3,000 Kuiper belt objects have been cataloged. In 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft made a historic flyby of Pluto, followed by a flyby ofArrokoth in 2019, revealing the variety and beauty of these distant worlds.

It was the discovery of numerous objects comparable in size to Pluto, such as Eris in 2005, that led the International Astronomical Union to reclassify Pluto in 2006. It is no longer considered a planet, but rather a dwarf planet — the first and most famous member of the Kuiper Belt.

If it exists, it would be several times the mass of Earth and would orbit more than 500 AU from the Sun. It has not yet been directly detected.
Can we send a mission to the Kuiper Belt?
Yes—New Horizons has already reached it in 2015 (Pluto) and 2019 (Arrokoth). But the enormous distances make these missions long (more than 9 years for Pluto) and costly. Future missions could explore other dwarf planets such as Haumea or Makemake.
